BIMM Berlin Songwriting student Mila Ziska’s honest and beautifully nostalgic song ‘Scars’ was recorded, mixed and mastered by talented fellow student Eli Straat. We interviewed Mila to find out what led her to create the track, what she loves most about studying at BIMM Berlin and what her songwriting process involved.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION/IS THERE A STORY BEHIND YOUR TRACK?
When I wrote ‘Scars’ I was thinking about how it is so easy to feel so lonely, even in a crowd of people; how everyone is hiding behind a facade, anxious about showing their weaknesses because they’re scared of getting hurt. I was sick of pretending.
WHAT DID YOUR PROCESS INVOLVE?
The actual songwriting process was pretty short. I was playing around on a guitar one day and the whole song just kind of wrote itself. However, I did take my time to try different things with the instrumentation and arrangement. I jammed a lot and asked my BIMM peers for their opinions. It was actually my good friend Luis Manuel’s idea to add the bossa nova guitar, which I really dig.
I then teamed up with some amazing musicians from my class to record the song at Yard Guerilla Records, which was an awesome experience. Eli Straat, who is a great producer from BIMM, recorded, mixed and mastered the track.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE/SECTION OF THE SONG?
Oh, that is a really tough question. I’ve spent so much time and energy on the song, which makes it really hard to choose now. But if I had to pick, I would say it’s that bit right where the verse goes into the chorus and the key changes. I’m also really happy with the line ‘I’ve been screaming underneath my breath’ because I feel it’s very powerful.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS?
Organic. Nostalgic. Fragile.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT STUDYING AT BIMM?
It would have to be the community. The people you meet at BIMM are all so inspiring to talk to and work with because everyone shares the same passion. I also think BIMM offers really great opportunities – the chance to go and record in a professional studio, for example.
