Lorenzo D’Alba is a BIMM Berlin first year Songwriting student from The Hague in the Netherlands. He goes by the artist name of DALBA. We caught up with him to find out more about his new EP Free Bird and the track: Father First.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION/IS THERE A STORY BEHIND YOUR TRACK?
The song is about the relationship and connection I have with my father (Damiano Dalba). It’s about really emotionally opening up to each other and in the song I’m asking for his guidance.
My father and I have a very special connection and over the years we’ve said a lot to each other without actually speaking. Writing this song has helped me understand this peculiar interaction. It’s allowed me to accept the situation we were in and see that, when it comes to our verbal communication, there’s room for improvement. I wrote this song quite a while ago, with the intention of performing it for my final exam at the Rotterdam pre-conservatory Codarts. Then, when I was preparing to record the album, I wrote all the arrangements and we recorded it with professional musicians.
WHAT DID YOUR PROCESS INVOLVE?
We produced it in a way that sounds very natural and we tried to stay very true to the original recording instead of adding a lot of production to it.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE/SECTION OF THE SONG?
I would have to say that my favourite part is just before the last section. There’s a two second break and then an organ slide to the 6/8 eruption of heaviness and I just think that the slide conflates very well with the last part.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS?
Honest. Dramatic. Pastiche (a work of art combining material from various sources).
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT STUDYING AT BIMM?
What I really love about BIMM Berlin is that there’s a peaceful and respectful learning environment. There’s no sense of rivalry or competition. Everybody does different things but shows mutual respect for each others’ art. I think this is the most important aspect of an art or music college. Besides that, I’m just in love with Berlin!
