Behind the Track: Keaton

What was the inspiration behind your track?

I think the main inspiration was the desire to write a song that had a strong sense of aesthetic and would put the listener in a relaxed mood whilst maintaining a good level of songwriting. Lyrically I enjoy writing songs from different perspectives rather than my own so I knew I wanted to write something with that in mind. I think the track suits a summer night kind of scenario which was definitely intentional. I remember at the time I was listening to a lot of Beach Boys and Elliot Smith as well.

What did your process involve?

I wrote and recorded the track over the course of 3 or 4 days. It was around late June time so I had a fair bit of spare time to write. The song was written on an acoustic guitar but I knew straight away what I wanted it to sound like so it didn’t take long for me to start recording

Is there a specific line that stands out in the song, and why?

The opening line ‘Take me uptown to take it away, show me why I’m just a cliché’ stands out to me because I feel it sets the tone of the lyrics perfectly, I knew I was onto something good once I wrote those lines. Also the line ‘I’m just looking for somewhere to rise put on a blindfold saying he’s just another guy’ sums up the meaning of the song nicely.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Bittersweet (but) dreamy tunes.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

I think the big thing for me is meeting people who are just as passionate about music and songwriting as you are and being able to do whatever you want to do in terms of creativity.
