What was the inspiration behind your track?
A couple of years ago I was feeling a little lost and ready to pack my bags to move in search of a new adventure. Whilst I was trying to figure out where (literally picking various different cities every week) I realised that Brighton still had my heart!! The track is about that process of realising where you want to be and why. It is about the people I share my life with and the chances I took to rebuild my life here.
What did your process involve?
This track developed from a poem that I wrote whilst I was figuring out where I wanted to be. Then the more I fell back in love with Brighton, the more I wanted to develop it into a song. The main focus for me was ensuring the track had a natural yet buzzing energy and that it involved as many friends as possible. The video was one of the most important (and fun) parts of the process. I wanted to get a strong visual representation of what the song meant and to capture the beauty of Brighton, Hove, friendships and creativity. ‘Rosie Powell Freelance’ worked with me on this and did such an amazing job.
Is there a specific line that stands out in the song, and why?
The most obvious would be, ‘city by the sea’ as it is the main hook and has proven to be annoyingly catchy (haha!). Actually for me though, I have found it super hard to choose just one line to answer this question! The whole song means the world to me lyrically, every line has its meaning.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Hmm….. Acoustic, Energy, Personality.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The people I have met and worked with! My producer Paul Lennox, all the musicians on this track, certain tutors who have inspired me musically and professionally… and pretty much all of the friends who join me when I gig as ‘Jenna Bennett and Friends’ <3
