Behind the Track

Behind the Track: Jarki Monno

8th May 2018

We caught up with Brighton artist Jarki Monno to go Behind the Track with his song ‘Can I Say’ from his new EP ‘If You Know’ which is released on 8th May 2018. Over to you Jarki.

What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?

The inspiration behind the track came from the whole university experience I guess, me and my house mate Jack Howard both wrote the song when we felt quite low purely from being away from home and family, and it was just a case of wanting to let them know if we don’t normally show our appreciation for family and friends, we truly do love them.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?

My favourite section of the song has to be the chorus, that’s where we really wanted to get the message across, and I think it shows. My favourite line is probably ‘lemme say I love you, even if its one last time’ as people sometimes get so carried away with how fast life is moving that they can forget (not on purpose) who got them to this point and how they kept them grounded.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

If had to describe my sound in three words I think it would be British, Truthful and Myself.

How do you feel your sound has developed since you graduated from BIMM?

BIMM has helped me come out of my shell an incredible amount and help me find myself as an artist, not just from the lectures and tutors, but also the people I have met there. The whole experience in itself has just pushed me to not be scared and almost do what I want. A good friend of mine at BIMM said it perfectly and said ‘you’ve got to think, you’re not at university and moving into the industry, you are already in the industry, and everything that happens to you now plays a part in your career.’ And I think that really struck me and made me realise, this is it, anything I do now is what will slowly build me, I may stumble across some tough patches and hurdles, but we’ve all overcome much worse times in our lives.

Anything exciting coming up over the next few months you can share?

I’m excited to say that my debut EP ‘If You Know’ will be released on the 8th of May on all digital platforms, and fingers crossed some gigs to come over this summer. Further exciting news that will be announced on my social media accounts in the near future.
