What was the inspiration behind your track?

When I was 19 I’d just started at BIMM Manchester, and being away from home for the first time, I was finding it hard to settle in! But after five weeks, I dropped out and joined a band based near London called The Treatment, who had toured with bands like KISS, Slash, and Aerosmith. Into The Wild is the story of that part of my life!

What did your process involve?

The song started off as just the chorus melody that you hear in the song, and it stayed in my mind from about the age of seventeen up until nineteen when I sat down to write the song finally. I was messing with a guitar one night in my first year at BIMM (the second time round) and started looking back on my journey up to that point, and the lyrics just poured out!

Is there are story behind the track?

In the first verse I sum up what I was thinking on the train towards London, when I realised what I was doing – dropping out of my course in Manchester (where I was already homesick) to move even further away from home, not knowing when I’d see my family next, and just feeling uncertain about my decision!

The second verse is based on a night when the band and I had played at some radio event at the Universal building in London. I remember wandering aimlessly around the streets of London on my own after the show, feeling lost, tired, not knowing what to do with myself and wishing I wasn’t so far away from my family and friends.

After each show on the tours, we’d normally stay overnight in some nowhere-hotel off the side of the motorway, and the noise of the amplifiers would ring in my head until I fell asleep. I was having vivid dreams at the time, and in them I was reliving lots of moments of growing up which was strange! The last line of that final verse is a nod to special people in my life that are sadly no longer here, and it’s my own little tribute to them.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Countryish rock-pop!

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

Being around so many other musicians and creative people!
