What was the inspiration behind your track?

Chestnut is a song about memories! The intro is spiky as the shell, it hurts you if you are not careful! The main melody is jolly and fun, it’s the cleaning process followed by cooking and peeling. Then it hits you. The nostalgic memory of the past enclosed in that unique smell of oven-cooked chestnuts. You start remembering your childhood: you used to cook them at home when it was raining outside but you are safe, protected by a blanket sitting next to the fireplace while watching a movie. That’s why the melody is the same, but in a different tempo and time signature! And then the ending: tasting time! Your reality mixes with the shades of the past and for a couple of minutes you live a timeless experience… We mean, literally!!! The song is also a tribute to Frank Zappa, because that’s how we got together in the first place – jamming his songs.

What did your process involve?

Well, with this kind of music the songwriting process is quite particular and doesn’t really follow a linear line. The first half of the song actually used to be another song we played with a singer and we decided to rearrange it almost a year later and we came up with the memory idea for Chestnut! The rest is musical nerdiness and a lot of sweat in a rehearsal room.

Is there a specific part that stands out in the song, and why?

The ending is actually a polyrhythmic line where we all play different time signatures! It was hard to make it sound not too weird, but drums are playing 4/4, bass 5/4 and guitar 6/4 with an extra 2 at the end to complete the cycle.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Zesty, colourful, jolly

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

BIMM has a place for anyone. Everybody has their unique musical voice and are free to express it. Chances are, you’ll find somebody that feels music the same way you do, whatever your taste is!

The song is also a part of our upcoming EP, ‘Seed’, which features a bunch of other musical snacks for your listening and dining pleasure. The release will be celebrated on the 17th of June along with another freshly squeezed EP by hard rock singer Dani Hart that is going to take place at The Cavendish Arms, with support from another BIMM London artist – Maella.
