AN INTERVIEW WITH DR MARK IRWIN: BIMM’S DEAN OF LEARNING, TEACHING & RESEARCH

Here at BIMM Berlin and Hamburg we’re extremely proud of our partnership with the prestigious University of Sussex.

The university counts three Nobel Prize winners, 12 Fellows of the British Academy in humanities and social sciences, and a winner of the Crafoord Prize for science among its alumni and staff, so it’s easy to see why this type of academic kudos is particularly unique for an international music school based in Germany. To delve into things a little more deeply, we spoke directly with the man responsible for maintaining our close relationship with the University of Sussex – BIMM’s Dean of Learning, Teaching and Research, Dr Mark Irwin – to learn just how exceptional BIMM’s academic credentials truly are.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE.

My name is Dr Mark Irwin and I’m the Dean of Learning, Teaching and Research at BIMM Institute and Head of the BIMM Institute Graduate School. My role encompasses oversight of the quality and enhancement of learning, teaching, postgraduate study and research across all BIMM Institute colleges in the UK and Europe. I lead a small team who support my work and the delivery of academic staff development, including our teacher training course – the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Professional Practice).

WHAT DOES THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX VALIDATION MEAN TO STUDENTS AT BIMM BERLIN AND BIMM HAMBURG?

While at BIMM we try to bring education off the page to ensure a practical and creative approach, the University of Sussex validates our awards for students studying in Berlin and Hamburg at higher education (degree) level. This means that when you graduate from BIMM Berlin or BIMM Hamburg, you receive your degree award and certificate from the University of Sussex.

HOW DOES THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX VALIDATION ENRICH THE EXPERIENCES OF BIMM STUDENTS?

The University of Sussex ensures that the courses we offer at BIMM are of the highest quality possible through regular review and periodical revalidation. BIMM Institute is a full partner of the University of Sussex and, therefore, closely aligned to the University of Sussex’s mission and ethos which is: to change lives and create a better world; to be different; and to foster kindness, integrity, inclusion, collaboration and courage.

DOES THE VALIDATION HAVE WORLDWIDE APPEAL FOR FUTURE EMPLOYERS?

The University of Sussex was founded in 1961 and is a leading research-intensive university in the UK with an excellent international reputation. It’s highly rated for both the quality of its teaching and research. The University of Sussex is currently ranked as a Top 25 UK university by The Complete University Guide 2019. As such, a University of Sussex degree is recognised by employers as a mark of excellence and quality assurance, and is a significant academic accolade.
