Atlas Wynd, garage-rock at its finest. Brighton based duo and Harry Sotnick Peter Chapman talk to Sam Rowlands about their experience in the festival fields, the move south and learning to take opportunities as they come.
How did you meet?
Peter Chapman: We went to school together in Stockton-on-Tees. We met there but I was like a computer nerd and Harry didn’t like me for whatever reason.
Harry Sotnick: You were just a bit of an idiot
How did you start making music?
PC: I started playing guitar when I was around seven, just because I got one for my birthday.
HS: I started drums when I was age ten, I used to tap on things all of the time so my mum got annoyed and was like, ‘You know what, I’ll get him a drum kit.’ I was the only one in the year and Pete was the only one in the year who was actually good at guitar.
How did you end up with the band name Atlas Wynd?
PC: It was a street that I lived on where we went to school.
How did you start working with BIMM Artist Promotion and Festival Manager Suzi Ireland?
HS: We were trying to figure out how to release a single properly and someone put us in touch with Suzi. She’s been helping us and it’s been sound; she’s got our backs.
What music do you listen to?
PC: I’ve always listened to rock music and I love old school hip-hop, like A Tribe Called Quest who are Gods to me.
Why did you decide to come to Brighton BIMM to study?
HS: I wanted to move as far away from Stockton-On-Tees as possible and Brighton is pretty far. We’ve achieved a lot through BIMM: we’ve played festivals like The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Truck, Y Not and Together The People; we played The Great Escape to a packed out room – there was a 15 minute queue to even get near the door! It was mad. We get to travel the country playing music and getting drunk with our pals.
What advice would you give to other bands?
PC: Just stick with it. It takes time. If we’d have jumped to where we are at now it would’ve been too mad. Everything happens at a good slow pace and you get used to the way it works. Just enjoy it!
