We caught up with BIMM Dublin Vocals graduate, Sinéad Furlong and asked her about the reasons she chose to join BIMM.
How did you get started?
I started singing and performing with different dance, drama and variety groups from the age of 3. Coming from a musical family, it was a large part of my upbringing as well. I was always encouraged to sing and perform and did so throughout school, so when I heard about BIMM it was an obvious decision.
Why did you choose BIMM Dublin?
I chose BIMM as the course was tailored towards contemporary music and there was the opportunity to perform regularly. Other music courses at the time had elements of this but I wasn’t really interested in their other aspects. I had always wanted to have a career in music and never really saw myself doing anything else!
What has been/was your highlight at BIMM?
The people! I met so many wonderful and talented friends over the course of the four years.
The masterclasses were great. It’s always interesting and reassuring to hear about other people’s careers and experiences in the industry. It’s eye opening and you can learn by example about being a professional musician this way too.
What advice would you give to future BIMM Students?
Enjoy it! Get involved in as many things as possible, don’t be afraid to share your ideas and see them through to a finished product. I would also encourage people to talk about performance anxiety and not to be afraid to ask for help in this regard. Also, whether it’s in terms of writing or the course work, don’t be afraid to ask for help and accept it when it’s offered. Use your network, the resources that are offered to you at BIMM, and collaborate with people – you’ll have more fun that way!
