Dorin Ben David was born in Israel, and grew up in Cologne, Germany. Dorin has since moved to Berlin to study Songwriting with us. We caught up with her to find out more about the transition and how she got started in music.
How did you get started in music?
I started doing it professionally by singing in live music bars and at events, but I soon realised that I wanted to write and produce my own songs and be able to do that independently, so I taught myself to play the piano and produce with Logic Pro X. The first sounds I came up with were very poppy and my lyrics were really positive but somehow I felt that it wasn’t really me. So right now I’m writing for other artists, while I try to figure out my own authentic sound.
Why did you choose BIMM Berlin?
After finishing school, I was working full-time in television but it had a negative impact on my creativity. I felt that I needed to be in a place that gave me more inspiration to develop my skills and pursue my dreams. I actually wanted to apply to BIMM London, but then I found out that there was also a BIMM in Berlin, which was great because it’s easier to make a living in Berlin… especially when you’re a student. So I stayed in Germany, and through BIMM I’ve become connected to the international music scene… and this is something you just don’t get from other German universities.
The songwriting camp was definitely one highlight – it gave me a lot of confidence. It was good training to write with others and actually end up finishing a song, because I tend to record a lot of ideas and usually have around 100 open projects.
What advice would you give to future BIMM students?
As this is only my first month at BIMM, I’m still trying to figure out some things and my biggest issue right now is time management. It’s important to have fun and get to know the people you’re studying with, especially in the beginning, but your priority should always be what you came for – to study music!
