There are some albums that are you just have to hear, whether it’s for the musicianship, songwriting or just the feeling the album gives you. We’ve asked our tutors for their ‘must listens’.

This one comes from BIMM London Bass Tutor, Greg Hofmann

Phuzekhemisi – Nginenkinga

“I think everyone should check out some Phuzekhemisi and this album ‘Nginenkinga’ in particular.

With everyone so obsessed with what’s going on in American music it’s great to realise that there are other continents and countries out there with music just as incredible.

This is a particular brand of Zulu music called Maskandi. The grooves on every track are outrageous and I love the bass playing. It’s a totally different approach which I have spent hours and hours working on and have applied the vibe to a lot of my own stuff. I love the group vocals too.

This is mantra music to me and whenever I’m feeling a lack of inspiration I put this on and I can’t help but feel stoked.

The music also reminds me of home on the East coast of South Africa. Check it out!”
