BIMM Freshers! You’re new in town, you’ve settled into your new digs, and you probably have the first instalment of that much-coveted student loan sitting in your bank account. But what to actually DO with it?
Well, your first instinct will most likely involve gathering up your newfound housemates and painting the town numerous shades of red. We wholeheartedly suggest doing this, if only to solidify some new friendships in this strange new environment.
But, before that all-important cash runs dry from all the bar-hopping and clothes shopping, we recommend taking a look at the plethora of student bargains available in this glorious music-filled city. So, we took it upon ourselves to compile this short-list featuring some of the best deals around. You’re welcome!
As the new academic year rolls around, the lovely folks at Monster Studios in Portslade (just a short hop along the seafront) are offering a humungous 50% discount to all students with a valid BIMM Student ID. The offer stands for any band daytime booking (before 6pm) and any weekend bookings.
Conveniently tucked away on Castle Street, just off Western Road, Small Pond offer top notch rehearsal space and recording studios at specially discounted prices for BIMM students. Deals include a 10% discount on off-peak rehearsals Monday-to-Friday before 6pm and exclusive recording deals just for BIMM students. They’ve even been known to throw a free beer your way if you check into the premises on Facebook on a Friday.
For a sneak peak into their facilities and to see a one-to-one interview with managing director and BIMM alumnus Vlad Matveikov, check out this video!
These guys are relatively new in town, but have already started making a big name for themselves as THE place for vinyl and an exciting addition to Brighton’s music scene. They’re nestled on Duke Street (in amongst the chocolate shops!) and as the name suggests, they’re all about the old school format. So, whether it’s a brand new limited edition picture disc or a rare original pressing you’re after, this awesome little boutique has you covered. They also sell a range of record players too, alongside an exclusive range of artwork, merchandise and accessories. And the best part is, they’re currently offering a 10% discount to students. Just make sure to bring a valid student I.D with you when stocking up your vinyl collection.
Situated just a short bus-hop up Lewes Road is Brighton Electric – a fantastic large high end recording and rehearsal studio complex with 17 rehearsal rooms and three recording studios. It’s one of the city’s most substantial and long-running facilities and even doubles up as a live music venue. Originally converted from an old tram house, B.E even boasts its own bar! Just remember not to get too sloshed during those rehearsals though, yeah guys? Although, with a 25% discount for students on both rehearsals and gear hire, you’ll definitely have a few extra beer tokens to spare.

Guitarists, bassists and drummers take heed! As musicians who have to lug gear around, it’s important your body health is maintained. So, if those aches and pains ever start to set in, hit up the team at Reach Physiotherapy on Dyke Road. They offer physio, massage, yoga, pilates, nutrition advice and have a bright and sunny clinic environment including Sonos surround sound technology; for all your music listening needs! They may even take requests if you ask nicely enough.
Instead of £50 for an initial assessment and treatment session, Reach Physiotherapy can offer students a £10 discount, taking the total to £40. This also applies to any follow up treatments – reducing the total treatment costs to £35 instead of £45. Just be sure to have a valid student I.D with you when you visit.

Gus G Masterclass @ GAK
Metal-heads unite! The legendary Gus G, guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and Firewind will be appearing in-store at GAK (Guitar Amp & Keyboard centre) on Wednesday 4th October for a masterclass, and showcase of his awesome new Jackson Gus G Star signature model guitars.
The event will take place at the Brighton shop in the heart of the North Laines. Come down for your chance to see exclusive solo performance as well as an informal talk and Q&A with the man himself. For a taste of what to expect, check out Gus’s visit to BIMM Manchester earlier this year.
Best of all, your attendance at this event it totally free of charge! However, you’ll have to register in order to gain entry.
Aside from this handful of deals and events, there are literally tons of student savings opportunities for you to take advantage of in town. So keep your eyes peeled!
Be warned though, it’s easy to get carried away once your student loan comes through, and no-one wants to make that shameful phone call to the bank of mum and dad asking for a top up. So, do yourself a favour – respect your bank balance, buy from independent retailers where you can, and spend a little time researching the best prices before parting with that precious cash!
