We have been chatting with students past and present to give you guys a little love and assistance on your musical journeys.
Here is Manchester’s Martha Phillips about her musical career so far…
What difference has BIMM made to your career?
A massive difference, it’s opened so many doors for me into the real music industry, with real contacts that I’ll have for life. It kind of felt like I was just pretending before I came to BIMM, but I’ve only been here a year and I already feel like I’ve learnt so much and am way more prepared for the world – my career has started properly since I’ve been here!
What inspires you to write/play music?
If I find a nice little chord progression or riff, that’s it, I’m off. Lyrically it’s usually things that are happening around me, relationships, hardship etc. It is exciting though, when you’re just getting on with your day and suddenly a spark hits you and you have to just drop everything and go to voice memos or whatever. Those songs are usually the best, when it kind of hits you out of nowhere!
Do you have any advice for new and future students?
Get involved with EVERYTHING, and I mean everything… audition for everything, turn up on time, offer to help out with things, every little thing builds up and gets people knowing your name and who you are. If people know who you are, you’re more likely to get picked for opportunities.
The main thing is to just be a nice person, people are way more willing to help you out!
