What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?
This song is about the surprise you feel when you begin something new and you’re not as affected by past relationships as you expected to be. Incidentally, it’s also the last song I ever wrote about a man!
What did your process involve?
I actually began writing this tune for a songwriting assignment in my first year at BIMM. I had the chorus roughly written but it didn’t go anywhere at the time. Months later I was on a train home for Christmas and the chorus re-entered my head – the entire song was finished in about ten minutes. Then when this band came together, it really took shape, and what started as a guitar ballad was now this groovy, upbeat pop song.
Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?
Our favourite part, both to play and listen to, is the second verse when the melodic instruments drop out and Jess and Emily (drummer and bassist) are left to do their thing.
Also, my favourite line is here: ‘He’s so indecisive but it’s nice to know he can’t think straight about me’. Writing this line was me taking a satirical look at how, in relationships, we often see what we want rather than the truth. In this case, his constant indecision was driving me insane, but I was drawn to the attention it paid me.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Groovy, grind-provoking, incidentally-sexy. Did I cheat?
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Definitely the network you develop. Every day you meet someone who can teach you something about writing, playing or the business in general – both students and tutors!
