What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?
This song is about classic unrequited love/lust. I had just been through my first proper heartbreak and I was feeling pretty done in by relationships so dramatically decided I was just going to stay on my own… until I met this guy. I really liked him and he sparked an interest in me but of course, he had a girlfriend. This song just captures those feelings of having an intense crush and your imagination running wild with it, knowing deep down it’s never going to happen but telling yourself it might one day to soften the blow. Girlfriend is a crazy, love-sick teenager in a song and musically I wanted it to sound like a daydream.
What did your process involve?
I have been writing songs since I was 15 and putting sub-standard electronic versions I made on GarageBand in my bedroom on SoundCloud. I’d always wanted to be in a band but never knew how to communicate my ideas or even the notes I had written for other musicians to play – but after studying at BIMM for a year I learned how to do that! One day I decided to get some of my mates from LPW (Live Performance Workshop) to jam out Girlfriend with me and I loved how it sounded live. So I got my course mates Katie, Couper, and Sayon to stick with me and bring those little electronic songs to life. Now we’re starting to gig and it’s all really exciting.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Ethereal, Experimental, Eclectic
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
I finally found my band! There’s no better place to network. It’s a hub of incredibly talented people. From musicians to promoters to photographers – there are so many genuinely incredible people in one place.
