What was the inspiration/is there a story behind the track?

When I was 14 and living in Turkey I went to study at a boarding school on a classical music scholarship. ‘Ghost’ was influenced by my memories from this time, although it was written years later. It was a difficult time for me and I was trying to figure out who I was and what I was doing. ‘Ghost’ talks about longing for another, better self, yet feeling lost in that moment not knowing your real purpose or identity – it’s about missing home and feeling self-doubt. At its core, ‘Ghost’ is about the confusion we go through in our search for identity.

How did you write this song?

I had a memory from boarding school of sitting on a windowsill at 3AM when it was really cold one morning. I started writing bits of lyrics here and there. After finding a chord progression which I liked I started putting the verses and chorus together. I write most of my songs this way by using the piano.

Do you have a favorite line/section in the song?

I think lyrically the line in the chorus “I stay awake chasing your Ghost” is my favorite line. It relates to the search of identity but also represents losing sleep over something that does not exist in the present, whatever that may be.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Alternative gothic rock

How do you feel your sound has developed since studying at BIMM?

When I started BIMM I think that I was limited in many of my musicianship skills. I had an idea of what I wanted to sound like and what sort of music I wanted to write, etc. But I could not piece it together. I had too much self-doubt to even attempt to do any of it. Studying at BIMM allowed me to overcome many of my fears and to improve in my abilities as a musician, songwriter, and performer.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

Being able to tailor projects for the course in a way that meets your personal goals and musical interests. I think the one-to-one tutorials available with lecturers are also very helpful.
