What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?

We had been saying that we wanted to write a high energy, uplifting track for a while and when Matt started playing the main riff idea at a rehearsal, we knew we wanted to use it. This track was a change for us because rather than writing about a specific event or situation, this time we let the song dictate the direction and ‘Alive’ now stands out in our set as being the “feel good” song. The lyrics ended up gravitating towards that feeling you get when your falling for someone in the early stages of a relationship. We’re not sure why this theme stood out, but it just felt natural, as it summarises that feeling of happiness you get when things are full of potential.

How did you write this song?

The main riff/idea was written by our guitarist Matt and straight away, we knew we wanted it to be something that people could jump around to. The idea was to bring energy to people, whether it was performed live or listened to at home, so we’re thankful our producer Paul Winstanley was able to deliver that across on the track. Ellie came up with the vocal melody and “Alive” lyric for the middle 8 as we were playing with the initial idea and this is what led to the name of the song and the direction we went in.

Once we had a structure, vibe and rough melody ideas, we took a few days away from the track which is always useful to make sure the idea feels just as strong when you come back to it with fresh ears. In the meantime Ellie and Mike had been working on lyrics based around ours ideas from the rehearsal room and the song came together quickly after that.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?

That’s a tough one – we would probably say the main riff coming into the song, which later repeats in half time at the end. Getting the groove in and nailing that “bouncing” rhythm is really satisfying when we perform it, and it instantly sets the mood.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Energetic, fun & electric

How do you feel your sound has developed from studying at BIMM?

The great thing for us is that we all come from various courses of BIMM, so each of us brings something different to the table. From songwriting, technical ability, stage presence, all the way to music production, we have gained such a vast set of useful skills from our time at BIMM. This has really helped us because from the beginning we have been knowledgeable about what works and how to achieve the sound we are looking for. This has been particularly useful with things like guitar tones and note choices in regards to vocals.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

The best thing about studying at BIMM for us has been having so many amazing opportunities to perform live, because it’s what we love! Not just smaller venues either, venues like Concorde 2, The Old Market and Coalition are just some of the larger venues that BIMM have helped us play during our time there. All the staff at BIMM – from the course tutors to the student support staff and the sound technicians – are friendly and will go out of their way for you because everyone shares a joint passion for music and they really want you to succeed!
