Behind the Track: Heroine

What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?

It’s about somebody who is trying to fit you into a box, and is telling you that they need to ‘save you’ like a knight, and it’s about me saying ‘I don’t need saving by somebody else, I’m not going to be your princess or damsel. I can look after myself’. It’s all about being your own saviour, and being independent.

How did you write this song?

So, the rest of the guys write pretty much a full song, and then they send over a recording and I go away and write the vocal parts. We tried writing together, but I prefer writing a full song in one session. I get free rein to write what I want over what they’ve written, which is really interesting and pushes me creatively.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?

Yes! It’s the last chorus, and the line is ‘I won’t be your rapunzel, I won’t be your princess’. I think it’s just a very powerful ‘no’ to the person who’s trying to chase you.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Fierce, sparky and raw

How do you feel your sound has developed from studying at BIMM?

I think we’ve all expanded our knowledge of our instruments, which has helped us to experiment and create the sound we have now. We’ve gone from jamming covers to writing songs with a distinct feel.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

The freedom to play what you want and the fact that we can take our original material to tutors, and lectures and get feedback. Obviously, the best part is meeting other musicians, and other like minded people and being able to be in that band you’ve always wanted to be in.
