What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?

It’s based on the idea of going out and dressing up more than usual on purpose to impress someone else, but in the end, you feel worse about yourself even though you look your best. I wrote the song about how I genuinely felt one night out in London, where I looked my best but didn’t feel my best at all. So in a way, the song is kind of making fun of myself dressing up for a person so they’ll notice me, but then I end up feeling sorry for myself.

I also really like the message of the song, there’s a big focus on social media, etc. These days everyone’s trying to make themselves look their best, but it’s often not necessarily their best at all, it’s just what they are pretending to be. So, it’s important to remember when people appear to look amazing they may not be feeling it.

How did you write this song?

I wrote the lyrics to the chorus first on the actual night that inspired the song. The words “I’m overdressed and a little stressed, at least I look my best but inside I’m a mess” were going around my head for a few weeks, then I started to write the first verse, found the chords and it all started to fall together. The song was originally a lot slower to start with but I made it faster as I wanted it to have a “dance while you cry” feel to it.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?

“I’ve been getting distracted when you’re not that attractive, I’m just being dramatic”
These are probably my favourite lyrics in the song because I can’t count the amount of times a day I say “I’m just being dramatic”

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Honest, Sassy, Emotional.

How do you feel your sound has developed from studying at BIMM?

I have definitely learnt to experiment more with my song ideas, instead of just writing the first lyric or melody that comes to my head, I now think more about how I want the song to make people feel and the message I am trying to promote to the listeners. I also feel I am a lot more confident in my own sound since studying at BIMM.

What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?

I get to meet so many creative talented people and I’m surrounded by opportunities to collaborate with others. I have learnt a lot from others and studying at BIMM has also given me confidence in myself as an artist and a songwriter.
