Is there a story behind the track?

In all honesty, the story behind the track is very simple- I had had enough of writing songs about being heartbroken and sad. Being a man who absolutely loves pop music I decided I just wanted to write a track which was fun and poppy. Here it is, ‘My Girl’.

How did you go about writing the track?

When writing the track I initially came up with the main line on the piano, it reminded me of an Ariana Grande song and I was like here we go, let’s write a banger. From there I came up with the chorus and worked on it around there, when the track was finished I took it to my producer, Luca Sadler and Artist Developer, Louis Veillon and we got to work on the beat. When Luca heard it he came up with the idea of using synths in the chorus to make it emulate something along the lines of ‘Dirty Sexy Money’ by David Guetta and Charli XCX.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the track?

My favourite section would be the pre-chorus, I love the claps and the change in register between the first and second one. When I took the song to Luca all I knew was “this needs claps”.

Did you approach this track differently to your previous singles?

This carries on from my previous single, ‘Hard Feelings’ in the sense of it being a completely electronic track as opposed to the live instruments used in my first EP. However, it is different in the sense that it’s a lot more fun and there’s not really much to think about with it. It is what it is and that’s a pop song.

Anything you’re looking forward to over the coming months?

I’m looking forward to returning to Bristol, gigging more and working on more music; putting 100% of my effort into it so I can achieve my dream of being a successful recording artist. As well as this, I’m very much looking forward to the release of my next single, as it is my favourite out of all of my songs so far.

How has your time at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

My time at BIMM has really helped me in working out the sort of musician I want to be. Prior to my studies, I was mainly a cover artist who had written a few songs here and there, but had no idea how to further myself. In my first year, I was lucky enough to meet an incredible group of supportive individuals who were willing to help me along this journey. I have now released an EP and two further singles and am constantly working on music. As well as this, there are always open ears from the staff who are willing to help on all musical needs.
